    YOGA IN THE PARK

    Description: Whether you're a seasoned yogi or new to the practice, Yoga in the Park is open to all levels. So roll out your mat, breathe in the fresh air, and let the natural surroundings inspire and rejuvenate you on your journey to wellness. There will be a post-session hike, and all are welcome to join to further embrace the beauty of nature. 

    Theme: The Timing of Nature; Patience

    Bring: Yoga mat, large towel, bug spray, and water bottle. 

    Facilities: Restrooms are located in the parking lot near the meadow.

    Instructor: Amanda Pawlowski- Amanda has been practicing yoga since 2011 and teaching since 2019, holding a 200-hour E-RYT. A trauma-informed teacher, her style focuses on building strength inside and out by prompting students to simply notice their experiences and the sensations those experiences provide. She enjoys using specific isometric cues to provide an embodied experience for all levels of experience. Amanda’s classes provide students with an opportunity to embrace the present moment through the breath and movement and to celebrate whatever the moment brings.

     Indian Rock Shelter Loop Trail

    Description: Join a National Park Service Ranger for a loop hike through a beautiful forest that was once home to Native Americans. Imagine a bustling village, dugout canoes on the riverbank, smoldering fires smoking fish and game, and piles of freshwater mussel shells. For at least eight thousand years people have used this area. For these people, the forests and rivers were supermarkets, building supplies, clothes, and drug stores.

    During this walk you will visit the largest natural rock shelter in the park and hear fascinating facts concerning these people’s uses of the available resources to survive and even prosper. We will also enjoy spring wildflowers, ferns, and the area’s rich diversity of wildlife.

    Facilities: None

    Difficulty: This walk is leisurely with moderate uphill sections. These walks are quite slow, with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

    Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Bring water and snacks. You may wish to bring binoculars and a hand lens. 

    Limit: 30 persons

    Lontra Loop Trail Hike

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a wonderful spring walk on the Lontra loop trail through a beautiful floodplain bottomland forest as we loop around the narrow floodplain. This is an excellent area for viewing wildlife. We will meander back along the river and look for wildlife and signs of wildlife. We might catch a glimpse of an Osprey or a Great Blue Heron. We will look for eatly spring flowers and ferns. 

    Facilities: Located in the center’s lodge

    Difficulty: This hike is leisurely on a flat floodplain trail. These walks are slow with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

    Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Bring plenty of water and a snack. 

    Limit: 30 persons

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a twilight program on the beloved and wildly successful turtle. The turtle has been around for millions of years of changes on our planet, but its success might be running out. Enjoy this fascinating program as the day ends and sunset approaches. 

    Facilities: Located in the Center’s Lodge.

    Difficulty: Easy level walking

    Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. You are invited to bring your own marshmallows for roasting over the campfire. We will provide roasting forks.

    Pollinator Garden Workday at Island Ford 

    April 8, 9 AM - 12 PM

    The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and The Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy have partnered with Birds Georgia to rejuvenate the area in front of the Visitor Center into a pollinator garden.  Birds Georgia will supervise the work, but we need your help.

    Registration is required to attend and is limited to 15 volunteers. 

    We plan to meet outside of the Visitor Center of the Island Ford unit of CRNRA (8800 Roberts Drive, Sandy Springs, GA 30350). There are parking spots available just outside the garden area, near the Visitor Center. CRNRA requires a $5 daily parking fee or the purchase of a $40 annual pass. The pollinator garden we will be working in is located just outside of the Visitor Center.

    Instructor: Tina Hewing- Tina’s teaching style is alignment-oriented and gentle, which allows students of all levels to find ease and comfort in their yoga practice. She emphasizes creating a safe and inclusive space for students to cultivate mind, body and breath awareness. Tina completed her 200- hour registered yoga teacher training with Dr. Naima Lewis and Hyer Dynamic Health Discoveries in 2014. Her training equipped her with the knowledge and skills to guide students through effective yoga practices that promote transformation and growth.

    Tina has taught in various settings, including a memorable experience leading yoga and meditation sessions on the Nile River in Egypt. The serene environment and ancient history added a unique dimension to her practice and deepened her understanding of yoga's roots. In addition to teaching, Tina is committed to ongoing learning and exploring new ways to expand her practice. She is grateful for the opportunity to share her passion for yoga with the community.

    Nutting Rock Loop Trail Walk

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a beautiful spring walk on the Lutra loop trail through an oak/hickory forest as we cross over a small ridge and stroll along the floodplain to the northernmost boundary of the unit. This is an excellent area for viewing wildlife. We will meander back along the river with the scenic shoals and rock formations, which include Native American nutting stones. We might catch a glimpse of an Osprey or a Great Blue Heron. The trail will offer a diverse collection of spring wildflowers and ferns, so please join us.

    Facilities: none

    Difficulty: This hike is leisurely. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

    Bring: Remember to dress for the weather and wear very comfortable hiking shoes. Bring water, binoculars, a hand lens, a notebook, and a camera.

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a campfire, program, guided walk and a beautiful summer day coming to an end. Discover new facts about the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area plants during a program on the historic uses of plants for food, medicine, and pigments. We will make Blueberry Ink and you can write and draw using twig pens, feathers, and brushes. We will also create works of art using mud from the wetlands. Create your own mud painting!

    Facilities: Located in the Center’s Lodge.

    Trout Lily Creek Loop Trail Hike

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for one of the most scenic walks in the entire park. Enjoy the beautiful forest, grand vistas of Thornton and Devil’s Race Course Shoals, and the dramatic palisades created by the Brevard Fault. We will descend the ridge, loop around at the base of Thornton Cliffs, walk past Diving Rock Beach to Sandy Point, and return up the ridge. Please join us for this walk through an area of fantastic beauty.

    Facilities: Located at Devil’s Stair Step three-quarters of the way through the hike

    Difficulty: This walk is leisurely, with a steep trail leading to the floodplain and back to the parking lot. These walks are quite slow, with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

    Instructor: Neda Hanson-  Neda turned to yoga after finding herself in hip pain, not realizing she was about to delve into a lifestyle. Soon after, she registered for Yoga Teacher Training and has been a huge advocate ever since. “What you avoid is often what you need” when telling people about her journey into yoga. Neda’s yoga style is slower and inviting. She enjoys learning the students needs and likes while exploring the physical element of yoga that suppports each student’s greatest well being. Neda is a 200 hour registered yoga teacher. She also holds a PharmD and Masters in Public health, and level 2 Reiki trained.

You are welcome to bring old colored paper, construction paper, and old colored tissue paper to use. Enjoy the campfire and the twilight. The activities are very casual and informal.

    Riparian Ramble Loop Walk

    Description:  Join Naturalist Jerry Hightower on a hike among the spring wildflowers and wildlife and learn more about the area’s natural and cultural history. This is a leisurely hike along a very level floodplain. Like much of the river corridor, this area has been used by humans for over 10,000 years. Perhaps farmed for centuries, Native Americans once lived on this land. It was the site of Judge Eugene Gunby’s horse farm. Today, it boasts a returning young bottomland forest and important river bottomland wetlands. Many birds call this area home. You will see old water oaks, river birch, and sycamores along the river's edge. We will discover plants used by the indigenous people and early settlers for food, medicine, and dye. Join us and discover this wonderful wildlife viewing area.

    Facilities: Located in the center’s lodge

    Gunby Creek Wetlands Wander

    Description: Join National Park Service Ranger Jerry Hightower for a wonderful meander along the river and the beautiful Cochran Shoals, across the wetland’s boardwalk, and into the rich oak-hickory forest. We will explore these beautiful bottomland wetlands as we wander around Gunby Creek and the surrounding forest. It is hard to believe that this was once the Akers Plantation and, in the twentieth Century, the horse farm of Judge Eugene Gunby.

    The forest floor supports a wonderful array of ferns and wildflowers while the soft mud along the stream reveals the visitors from the previous night. We will see the second-largest indigenous rock shelter, an amazing cliff habitat, and maybe a salamander or two. Returning by the same route, we will surely find even more to discover from a different direction.

    April Community Hike

    Description: Our April hike is at the historic Vickery Creek location. The 5-mile hike will start at the Covered Bridge and travel along the perimeter and inside trails of this well-forested unit. A highlight is the view of the Falls that supported the historic Roswell Mill.

    Facilities: Restrooms by the covered bridge

    Difficulty: This is a moderate 6-mile hike; hiking poles may be helpful.  

    BringDress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for forest trail walking, considering layers for temperature changes. Remember to bring water and snacks, and pack binoculars and a hand lens for a more immersive experience. Sunscreen and bug spray are also encouraged. 

    Restrictions: No Children under 10 and No Dogs

    Note: A daily entrance fee of $5 or annual pass is required.

    Instructor: Neda Hanson-  Neda turned to yoga after finding herself in hip pain, not realizing she was about to delve into a lifestyle. Soon after, she registered for Yoga Teacher Training and has been a huge advocate ever since. “What you avoid is often what you need” when telling people about her journey into yoga. Neda’s yoga style is slower and inviting. She enjoys learning the students needs and likes while exploring the physical element of yoga that suppports each student’s greatest well being. Neda is a 200 hour registered yoga teacher. She also holds a PharmD and Masters in Public health, and level 2 Reiki trained.

    Instructor: Amanda Pawlowski- Amanda has been practicing yoga since 2011 and teaching since 2019, holding a 200-hour E-RYT. A trauma-informed teacher, her style focuses on building strength inside and out by prompting students to simply notice their experiences and the sensations those experiences provide. She enjoys using specific isometric cues to provide an embodied experience for all levels of experience. Amanda’s classes provide students with an opportunity to embrace the present moment through the breath and movement and to celebrate whatever the moment brings.

    Lontra Loop Trail Hike

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a wonderful spring walk on the Lontra loop trail through a beautiful floodplain bottomland forest as we loop around the narrow floodplain. This is an excellent area for viewing wildlife. We will meander back along the river and look for wildlife and signs of wildlife. We might catch a glimpse of an Osprey or a Great Blue Heron. We will look for eatly spring flowers and ferns. 

    Facilities: Located in the center’s lodge

    Difficulty: This hike is leisurely on a flat floodplain trail. These walks are slow with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

    Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Bring plenty of water and a snack.

    CAMPFIRE PROGRAM-

    Historic Uses of Plants for Food, Medicine, and Pigments

    Saturday, May 11

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a campfire, program, guided walk, and a beautiful summer day coming to an end. Discover new facts about the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area plants during a program on the historical uses of plants for food, medicine, and pigments. We will make Blueberry Ink and you can write and draw using twig pens, feathers, and brushes. We will also create works of art using mud from the wetlands.


    You are welcome to come early and bring a picnic dinner. After the program, you are invited to join us on a short walk on the Three Forks Loop Trail.


    Facilities: Located in the Center’s Lodge.

    Difficulty: Easy level walking

    Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. You are invited to bring your own marshmallows for roasting over the campfire. We will provide roasting forks.

    Pollinator Garden Workday at Island Ford

    The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and The Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy have partnered with Birds Georgia to rejuvenate the area in front of the Visitor Center into a pollinator garden.  Work will be supervised by Birds Georgia, but we need your help.

    Registration is required to attend and is limited to 15 volunteers. 

    We plan to meet outside of the Visitor Center of the Island Ford unit of CRNRA (8800 Roberts Drive, Sandy Springs, GA 30350). There are parking spots available just outside the garden area, near the Visitor Center. CRNRA requires a $5 daily parking fee or the purchase of a $40 annual pass. The pollinator garden we will be working in is located just outside of the Visitor Center.

    Description:  Join National Park Service Ranger Jerry Hightower for a walk around Island Ford Pond, through the oak-hickory forest to the river, and along the river edge trail to a naturally occurring rock overhang that was used by the indigenous people for shelter. We will meander back along the river with the scenic shoals and rock formations. You will see old water oaks, river birch, and sycamores along the river's edge. We will discover plants used by the indigenous people and early settlers for food, medicine, and dye. We might catch a glimpse of an Osprey or a Great Blue Heron.     MAGNOLIAS AND RIDGE TOPS

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a great loop hike through the oak-hickory ridge forest, mesic forest, and the ridge top trail on the steep slopes above the scenic Vickery Creek Ravine. We will see a very large, big-leaved Umbrella Magnolia.

    Our loop will take us past beautiful areas with native ferns, shrubs, and wildflowers. The ridge-top trail shows plants that survive in shallow soils, cliff areas, and dry conditions. This is a great trail to discover.

    Facilities: Trees and thick shrubs.

    Difficulty: This hike is moderately strenuous with a few steep slopes. These walks are quite slow with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

    Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Bring water, and you might include snacks. You may wish to bring binoculars and a hand lens. Note: A daily entrance fee or annual pass is needed.

    Blood Rock Ridge Loop Trail Hike

    Description: Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower for a relatively leisurely hike along the river, across scenic Rottenwood Creek, and through the forest around Blood Rock Ridge. This is a beautiful opportunity to view Great Blue Herons fishing, hear the Belted Kingfisher's call, see signs of wildlife, and a bit of geology. Learn fascinating facts and a fable or two about the diverse and abundant wildlife. Enjoy great views of Long Island Shoals as you walk along the trails and learn the grim story of Lightning Rock. Along the trail, we will look for signs of wildlife and spring flowers. 

    Facilities: Restrooms in the parking area

    Difficulty: Moderately easy with a 100-meter steep section and climb over uneven rocks at Lightening Rock. These walks are slow, with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

     Indian Rock Shelter Loop Trail

    Description: Join a National Park Service Ranger for a loop hike through a beautiful forest that was once home to Native Americans. Imagine a bustling village, dugout canoes on the riverbank, smoldering fires smoking fish and game, and piles of freshwater mussel shells. For at least eight thousand years, people have used this area. For these people, the forests and rivers were supermarkets, building supplies, clothes, and drug stores.

    During this walk you will visit the largest natural rock shelter in the park and hear fascinating facts concerning these people’s uses of the available resources to survive and even prosper. We will also enjoy spring wildflowers, ferns, and the area’s rich diversity of wildlife.

    Facilities: None

    Difficulty: This walk is leisurely with moderate uphill sections. These walks are quite slow, with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

    Forest Loop Trail

    Description: Join National Park Service Ranger Jerry Hightower for a walk through a beautiful hardwood forest supporting a thriving diversity of native ferns, flowering shrubs, and wildflowers. We will hike through the xeric oak-hickory forest and mesic ravine forest down to Sope Creek. Imagine this area as farm fields or pine plantations for the mills instead of forest as we walk along the traces of nineteenth-century farm roads. Look for paw prints of the many species of wildlife that thrive here and perhaps see a salamander or two from the tiny tributaries.

    Facilities: Nearby Terrell Mill Park 

    Difficulty: This hike is leisurely on a flat floodplain trail. These walks are slow, with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.
