10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Description: Join a National Park Service Ranger for a loop hike through a beautiful forest that was once home to Native Americans. Imagine a bustling village, dugout canoes on the riverbank, smoldering fires smoking fish and game, and piles of freshwater mussel shells. For at least eight thousand years people have used this area. For these people, the forests and rivers were supermarkets, building supplies, clothes, and drug stores.
During this walk you will visit the largest natural rock shelter in the park and hear fascinating facts concerning these people’s uses of the available resources to survive and even prosper. We will also enjoy spring wildflowers, ferns, and the area’s rich diversity of wildlife.
Facilities: None
Difficulty: This walk is leisurely with moderate uphill sections. These walks are quite slow, with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.
Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Bring water and snacks. You may wish to bring binoculars and a hand lens.
Limit: 30 persons
