Gunby Creek Wetlands Wander

Description: Join National Park Service Ranger Jerry Hightower for a wonderful meander along the river and the beautiful Cochran Shoals, across the wetland’s boardwalk, and into the rich oak-hickory forest. We will explore these beautiful bottomland wetlands as we wander around Gunby Creek and the surrounding forest. It is hard to believe that this was once the Akers Plantation and, in the twentieth Century, the horse farm of Judge Eugene Gunby.

The forest floor supports a wonderful array of ferns and wildflowers while the soft mud along the stream reveals the visitors from the previous night. We will see the second-largest indigenous rock shelter, an amazing cliff habitat, and maybe a salamander or two. Returning by the same route, we will surely find even more to discover from a different direction.

Facilities: In the parking area

Difficulty: This hike is leisurely on a flat floodplain trail. These walks are slow with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.

Bring: Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on a forest trail. Bring plenty of water and a snack. 

Limit: 30 persons
