You will not want to miss this popular Walk & Talk event led by Bill Witherspoon!
Bill Witherspoon, co-author of Roadside Geology of Georgia, takes us to some geologic wonders. Walk to one of the metro-area’s largest natural rock faces exposing our most typical rock type, biotite gneiss. Along the trail are outcrops of the tough rock, quartzite, which is responsible for the impressive depth and steep walls of Chattahoochee Palisades gorge. At the top of the Palisades, overlooking Devil’s Racecourse Shoals, the power of the Chattahoochee is impressive. The two-mile, moderate walk has steep up-hill climbs.
Ages 10 and up.
Please no dogs.
Limit:15
WE ASK THAT ALL PARTICIPANTS BE VACCINATED AND THAT THEY WEAR A MASK DURING THE PROGRAM. WE APPRECIATE YOUR ASSISTANCE IN HELPING TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE.
About the Guide: Dr. Witherspoon taught geology to K-12 students and their teachers for 17 years at DeKalb County Schools’ Fernbank Science Center. Dr. Bill Witherspoon and Dr. Pamela Gore co-authored the popular guide, Roadside Geology of Georgia, a full-color volume on Georgia's wonders, from the coast to the mountains: landscapes, rocks, minerals, fossils, and the human stories geology has shaped.
